Bringing home a new kitten is an exciting experience for any new pet owner, and also for us! Here we'd like to help you by sharing our best tips to make the first days of your kitten at home a smooth and comfortable transition:
- Prepare a safe space: Before bringing your kitten home, prepare a room for them to explore and settle in. Ideally, your bedroom, where the kitten can't get into any trouble. Make sure the space has everything your kitten needs (cat litter, cat scratchers, cat tree if possible, food and water as well as some toys! You should keep your Maine Coon kitten in this room for the first few days until he is comfortable.
- Be patient: Your kitten will likely be a little scared and overwhelmed at first, so give them some time to adjust to their new environment. Don't force them to come out of their hiding spot, but instead let them come to you at their own pace.
- Offer food and water: Provide your kitten with fresh food and water, and make sure they know where to find it. Give your kitten the same food he used to get in his previous house. this is to avoid diarrhoea and vomiting or him to refuse eating at all.
- Introduce the litter box: I always advise putting the kitten in the litter box as soon as possible when reaching home so that he knows quickly where his toilet is located. Do keep the litter box away from the food and water. Same as the previous point, I highly advise you to keep the same litter sand as the kitten used to have before joining you. I always give a sample bag of the litter used by my kittens when they leave the pet shop so that the new family can add it to their litter box which will make the kitten recognise the scent.
- Play and socialise: Spend time playing and interacting with your kitten, but also give them time to rest and sleep. This will help them bond with you and feel more comfortable in their new home. I recommend taking one or two days off when you bring your kitten home and spend as much time as possible with your kitten. Offer treats and cuddle, this way he will feel safe with you and open up faster.
- Be vigilant: Keep a close eye on your kitten, especially during the first few days, to ensure they are eating, drinking, and using the litter box properly.
According to my experience, this is the safest way to bring your kitten home and make him feel comfortable in his new environment. He should slowly meet with everyone living in the house and not be too stimulated or put under stress.
