KITTEN CARE

When to take your maine coon to the vet?

Cats can get sick. To know when there is something wrong with your cat, which might require veterinary care, you must know your cat when it is healthy. Also, if you need to take your cat to the veterinarian, there are several things that they need to know and will ask you about. Since cats cannot talk, we have to look at their behaviour to see when things are wrong. You will know your cat better than the veterinarian, so you can often describe what is wrong.

Take note that contacting your veterinarian when your cat shows sign of illness is very important! If your cat needs veterinary care, you have to make sure it gets it. It can often be good to have a good pet insurance, to help with the costs.

Here are some indicators of when you should take your cat to the veterinarian for an examination and diagnosis :

  • Changes in eating or drinking habits: If your cat stops eating or drinking, or if they are eating or drinking much more than usual, it could be a sign of an underlying health issue.
  • Changes in litter box habits: If your cat is using the litter box more or less frequently than usual, or if they are straining to urinate or defecate, it may be a sign of a urinary tract infection or other health problem.
  • Lethargy or weakness: If your cat is sleeping more than usual, is less active, or seems weaker than usual, it is a call you bring it immediately to the veterinarian.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea: If your cat is vomiting or experiencing diarrhea, it could be a sign of an upset stomach or an infection.
  • Breathing problems: If your cat is having difficulty breathing, is breathing rapidly or noisily, or seems to be panting, it could be a sign of a respiratory infection and should be brought to the veterinarian rapidly.
  • Changes in behaviour or mood: If your cat is acting differently than usual, is more aggressive or withdrawn, or seems to be in pain.
  • If your cat is bleeding, you should take it to the veterinarian as soon as possible.

Early detection and treatment of health problems will keep your cat healthy and happy.
