Originally a working cat, the Maine Coon is solid, rugged, and can endure a harsh climate. A distinctive characteristic is its smooth, shaggy coat. A well proportioned and balanced appearance with no part of the cat being exaggerated. With an essentially amiable disposition, it has adapted to varied environments.

• The body overall : The Maine Coon has a large, long, muscular body that is well-balanced & rectangular in length. 
• The head : The head slightly longer than it is wide, they have a square muzzle and high cheek-bones with a strong chin. 
• The eyes : The eye color of Maine Coon can only be different shades of green, gold, green-gold or copper. White Maine Coon cats may have blue or odd eyes. They also do have large, expressive, wide-set eyes that are slightly oval. 
• The ears : Large, well-tufted ears, wide at base, the tufts of fur on their ears are one of their most distinctive features.
• The coat : Heavy, shaggy, silky coat that falls smoothly over the body. Their fur comes in a variety of colors and patterns, including tabby, tortoiseshell, solid, and bi-color.
• The tail : Long, tapering tail with flowing fur 
• The legs : Wide-set, substantial legs with large, round, well-tufted feet
• The Paws: Maine Coons have large, round paws with tufts of fur between their toes. This helps them to walk on snow and ice without slipping.
