KITTEN CARE

HOW DO I KEEP MY MAINE COON KITTEN AT HOME?

Congratulations on your new 3 month old Maine Coon kitten! Here are some tips on how to care for your new furry friend on a daily basis:

  1. Feeding: Maine Coon Kittens require a specific diet that is high in protein and fat. You can start by giving them kitten-specific wet or dry food. I always recommend to leave a free food access to your kitten. Cats are known to have many small meals during the day, they are not like humans who go for breakfast lunch and dinner, instead they will have around 10 to 20 micro meals during the day, to avoid frustrating them it is better to let them chose when they want to have their meal. If you decide to give can food, you can for example give just in the morning or morning and night and leave free access to kibbles for the rest of the day.
  2. Water: Always keep fresh water available for your kitten. The best is to have a water fountain with a filter that you can clean and re-fill every 2-3 days.
  3. Litter Box: Provide a clean litter box and make sure it is accessible to the kitten. Scoop it morning and evening. For Maine Coon kitten, I recommend to get a BIG litter box as they will grow huge and may not fit anymore after a few months.
  4. Playtime: Kittens love to play, so provide them with toys, scratching posts, and interactive playtime, you need to give at least 30 minute of your time to your Maine Coon kitten every day for exercising for him to stay happy and healthy.
  5. Cat Tree: Maine Coons are active and playful cats, and a cat tree provides them with a safe and fun way to exercise and burn off excess energy. Climbing, jumping, and scratching on a cat tree helps Maine Coons stay fit and healthy. Maine Coons are also known for their love of heights, and a cat tree provides them with a high perch where they can survey their surroundings and feel safe and secure.
  6. Grooming: Brush your kitten’s fur regularly to get him used to it and prevent matting and hairballs. We share our grooming routine here.
  7. Veterinary Care: Take your kitten to a veterinarian for regular checkups, vaccinations, and deworming. You need to apply external deworming to your kitten every month. You can get the deworming treatment at your veterinary clinic, pet shops or online. Here are some situations where you should also take your kitten to the veterinarian.
  8. Safety: Ensure your kitten's safety by keeping them indoors or in a safe, enclosed area. Also, remove any hazardous items, such as toxic plants or cleaning supplies. Here is a list of dangers in the house that could severely harm your kitten. Our advice on how to secure your house for your Maine Coon kitten is here.
